Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years of age and older, some disabled persons under 65 years of age, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis
or a transplant). There are two parts to the Medicare program: Medicare Part A covers hospital insurance and Medicare Part B covers medical insurance.
Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A processes Medicare bills and benefit payments on behalf of the federal government for hospital services. Part A hospital insurance helps pay for care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health care. Rhode
Island Medicare Services, your fiscal intermediary, handles your Medicare Part A bills.
Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B processes Medicare claims on behalf of the federal government for medical services. Part B medical insurance helps pay for doctors, outpatient hospital care, and some other medical services that Part A does not cover such as the
services of physical and occupational therapists, and some home health services. Medicare Part B also helps pay for several covered preventative services. Rhode Island Medicare Services, your Medicare carrier, handles your Medicare Part B bills.
